Harrington rods
Despite the risks, I had spinal fusion surgery in April 1966.
During this procedure, two metal rods, called Harrington rods, were attached to
vertebrae in my back to hold my spine in place and prevent it from curving further.
The surgery was a success and, in combination with body casts and braces over
the next 7 years, further spinal curvature was prevented.
